Suicide is commonly associated with mental disorders like depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, alcoholism and drug abuse. It exists among students, youth, poor people and women as well.

Therefore, the need of statewide suicide prevention center has been advocated by many citizens in Iowa. Around 800,000 to a million people die by suicide every year worldwide. 2012 witnessed 32 Iowa teens died by suicide.

Collective efforts are required to reduce the incidence of suicide through preventive measures as it is a community issue. Legal support to prevent suicide is very much needed for implementation of preventive measures.
These preventive measures include reduction of access to firearms and toxins, reducing access to charcoal and barriers on bridges and subway platforms.

Other preventive measures are treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, depression, etc. Teenager suicides can be prevented through timely counseling. Counseling means talking to troubled teen to find reason for suicide attempts and solving his/her problems which may give happiness to
him or her.

If mental illness is the cause of suicide attempt, then timely medical treatment is provided to the person concerned. In Iowa, state legislators have formed a 23 member Suicide Prevention and Trauma Informed Care Task Force to implement and monitor suicide prevention.

In Iowa, a draft has been proposed for teachers training to prevent suicides because students are more near to teachers who in turn can monitor early warning signs of suicides among students. Ellen McGinnis-Smith, a consultant with the Iowa Department of Education, is in favor of training and support for educators to control suicides.
