Attain good character with education is the key.

The concept of good education has undergone a sea change in the modern times. Years ago, real education meant achieving a sound character, high moral standards along with academic knowledge. A well-educated was seen to possess highly cultured behavior, high ethical standards, moral values and good qualification. Over a period, a lot of importance is given to merely scoring marks by hook or by crook and landing a good job. Parents too, on their part, want the children to just score good grades and do not bother if they are developing good moral values or not. Teachers are no exception either. In many cases, teachers just take up a teaching job and view it as a source of income.

All the above aspects were recently viewed with concern by the Fiji government and the education board. Doctor Priscilla Puamau, team leader and senior education adviser of Access to Quality Education Program (AQEP) Fiji, had many observations to make in this regard in a recent gathering of Fijian Teachers Association 80th annual delegates conference in Suva. She spoke about various aspects with the matter of teaching and learning and the onus fell on the teachers, to begin with, to ensure emphasis on integrity, high morals and quality education.
